This in an email from Andrea about Grandma:
Okay . . we met the surgeon, Dr. Soltero, nice guy, verrrrry cool, calm, collected. Which is good, in light of the fact that mom had some really bizarre responses to his questions. He has a great poker face. In response to her concerns: the only real risk of her croaking on the table is with a stroke. He said they take a look at everything before they manipulate it in order to reduce the chance of knocking plaque loose, and that there is only a 5% chance it could happen. Also, he had no problem with her bringing her bishop, he could even be in the room with her if she wanted, but he could not guarantee whether any of the other staff would have a problem being blessed, even though mom told him it was his responsibility to tell them they had to. He took note of her problems with anesthesia and drugs. He told her that the surgery would not cure the heart disease, that her lifestyle must include diet, exercise, and drugs, as well as getting the diabetes and high blood pressure treated (she is still denying that she has diabetes.) She says she is taking the blood pressure meds, yet her reading was over 200 in the office today. He said she must be really nervous.Timeline: The nurse will process the insurance paperwork; there will be two trips to Burbank for her to donate two units of her own blood (3 wks total); she has to have an ultrasound of her neck; blood tests; another visit with Dr. Soltero in Northridge; then the surgery is scheduled at Holy Cross. I have no idea how much time all this will take, as it depends on the office schedules of all the places we have to go. For instance, Dr. Soltero only sees patients on Tuesdays. She will be in the hospital for a week; then recover at home for 2-3 weeks, with a total recovery time of about 2-3 months. When she leaves the hospital she should be fully able to walk, shower, go to the bathroom. He said she would need help with housework and, maybe, meals, for the first 2-3 weeks, after which she will be fine, but slow. That's all, folks!!

Thanks for the update Shan. Glad Andreas on top of that.Sounds like a bit of a long haul... and she must be so nervous. BIshop in the OR? Wonder what the BIshop thinks of that. Kind of entertaining :) But again, she must be pretty nervous. I hope she's able to get the help she needs to recover well.
I got a good laugh from that one too Nik :) Grandma is a funny one
We will keep her in our prayers. Thanks for the update.
